|Rosendo Benavides Elementary Enjoys Tertulia|
Posted Date: 02/22/2017
On December 13th, the students from Benavides and Fordyce Elementaries enjoyed the Fall Literacy Tertulia. When Benavides Principal, first heard the word “tertulia,” she didn’t know what it was. Mrs. Alma Salinas, District library/media/textbook director spoke about the tertulia with such enthusiasm that Ms. Donna Martinez knew it had to be something great. Indeed it was. The Sullivan City Park and pavilion was decorated with lights, colorful picado banners, piñatas and lots of books. Clifford the big red dog and Santa Claus made an appearance. Students, parents, and staff members enjoyed a family evening together. Some staff members from the District Language arts department were doing fun activities with the children. There were great guest readers. The Students really enjoyed the story read by a La Joya High School mariachi member. Many school board members and community members came to support this event. There was food, water, and fun for all to enjoy. Two students were lucky winners Antonio Sifuentes won a bicycle and Patricia Garcia won a humongous teddy bear. Every child that attended received 1 or 2 books of their choice, which made them all winners. At Benavides Elementary, everyone now knows that a tertulia is a social gathering with a special purpose. It is an event that will be enjoyed by all. It is a time to relax and have fun. A special “thank you” to everyone that helped made this event a success. By everyone working together, this tertulia is something that will not be forgotten. By: Donna Martinez
