Benavides Elementary amazed by Solar Eclipse
By: Mrs. Aurora L. Mireles
On Monday, August 21, 2017, Rosendo Benavides Elementary students had an awesome first day of school year experience viewing the Solar Eclipse for their first time in their lives. All students and staff received special solar eclipse viewing glasses through a grant that all libraries of La Joya ISD applied. Rosendo Benavides Elementary Library received one thousand glasses. All second grade students were invited to the library for a special demonstration and presentation of the Solar Eclipse. Safety procedures were also discussed with all students. Aside from the special glasses, all students from first through fifth grades were given solar UV beads to make bracelets in the classroom so that when students went outside to view the eclipse they could wear their bracelets that changed color when exposed to the sun. Some students loved these bracelets so much they were still wearing them at the end of the week. Many resources were available for the teachers so that all students had some kind of learning activity done in their classrooms. When the time came to go outside and view the eclipse, students were excessively excited, and some scared because being something they were going to observe for the first time. It was such a great learning experience for all of our students. Their eyes were astonished at what they got to view. An experience they surely will always remember. All staff at Rosendo Benavides Elementary feels content that we gave them the opportunity to experience it.
