Rosendo Benavides

1921-1974

Mr. Rosendo Benavides was born in Los Ebanos, Texas on August 12, 1921. He was the son of Romulo Benavides and Preciliana Garcia. On September 17, 1942, at age 21, Rosendo Benavides joined the United States Army where he served in the United States and Germany in the Artillery division. He was honorably discharged on October 17, 1945.

On February 22, 1947, he married Maria Longoria, they had four children, Roel Rosendo, Noemi, Joel and Maria Nidia.

On May 1952, he moved to Sullivan City where he opened a grocery store. He also, purchased land in Sullivan City that was used for farming, grazing and the development of Benavides 1/2 subdivisions. In 1968, Rosendo Benavides donated land to be used as the Sullivan City Cemetary.

Mr. Rosendo Benavides became an active political leader and served as a board member of the La Joya Independent School District from 1967-1969. He was well known in the community for his honesty, fairness and the many contributions he afforded his peers.

Mr. Rosendo Benavides passed away on August 19, 1974.

Mr. Rosendo Benavides was honored by his family through their donation of land to La Joya ISD, to be used as the site for Rosendo Benavides Elementary.
